On the night of September 8-9, KinoPoisk launches the series The Lost, a multi-episode thriller by American director Vadim Perelman, who filmed in Hollywood (including under the patronage of Steven Spielberg), participated in the Berlinale, and in between to do Russian projects as well (for example, “Treason” with Elena Lyadova or a short story in the fifth “Christmas Trees”). The heroine of “The Lost” is a rich heiress who disappeared 10 years ago and suddenly appeared – the first big role of the promising actress Liza Yankovskaya, whom we have been following for a long time, and now we have waited.

Anastasia Poletaeva, a journalist and head of the content and design department, talked to her about dedication, heredity, and the impostor syndrome. And of course, about shooting with Perelman. Congratulations on your first lead role!

How does it feel? I saw that “The Missing” has 99 percent of the expectation on “KinoPoisk”.

Honestly, I went nuts when I saw this. Why not 100% then? (laughs)

How did you get into this project?

It was some kind of really huge casting – I don’t want to lie, but about two and a half thousand girls looked for the main role. At first, everyone was asked to send self-tests, but I have never recorded self-tests in my life and I don’t know how to do it. As a result, I recorded them for three days in a row. After there were qualifying rounds. All this work Vadim Perelman (director of “The Lost”, as well as the series “Treason” and the Hollywood film “House of Sand and Fog”, nominated for three Oscars. – Approx. The Blueprint) together with his wife Tonya Perelman (casting director “Missing” – Note by The Blueprint) was conducted remotely – from Canada. For example, tests with the director took place in zoom.

Did you have any TK for self-tests?

There was a whole sheet of A4 with instructions on what to do. They also sent the script and three scenes to read, which just needed to be recorded on video. These are the three most difficult scenes in terms of acting range. It turned out that there are some other rules: how to dress properly for self-tests, what should be the background. I didn’t know any of this and did what I did.

Recorded on the phone?

To the computer. My mother and I came up with a whole system: she called me on the phone and threw remarks, and I wrote it all down on a computer. Then we met with Vadim and Tonya by zoom and discussed the character. The tests themselves lasted probably a month – Vadim asked me to try very different directions.

Were you looking for a character?

Of course. I don’t know if I should have offered something to Vadim or not, but I did it. And Vadim took me with this vision of the heroine and began to rock me in different directions: to try this, that, that. He, too, searched, groped. There were terrible moments when I just didn’t succeed, and we both realized that we were moving in the wrong direction. I was nervous, because I had not even been approved for the role yet, and Vadim said: “That’s it, I understand, let’s do it differently.” Then there were ensemble auditions with other actors – for example, I had a week when I auditioned every day with different mothers of my character, we played the same scene in zoom.

With mom, by the way, it’s interesting. I separately googled Maria Kulikova, who played the mother of your character in The Lost, a very familiar face, but I couldn’t remember where I saw her. But it turned out that she is a very famous serial actress, she just plays in a completely different type of series – in federal ones.

Yes, yes, yes.

But she looks very organic in Lost Girl.

Vadim is generally interested in choosing actors.

How were you informed that you passed?

Tonya Perelman wrote to me. While the casting was going on, I always received very solemn messages from her in the mail, similar to holiday cards: “Congratulations, you made it to the next round.” And at some point I was informed in the mail that there were a lot of girls, but they chose me. I am quite a modest person, and at that moment I felt like I was Harry Potter. I do not know how to say.

Impostor Syndrome?

Yes! From congratulations, excessive attention, fanfare, the impostor syndrome immediately turns on in me, I immediately get lost. So far, I can not adequately respond to such things.

But since you went through so many stages of selection, something must have hooked you.

First of all, I really wanted to work with Perelman. This is the first and main thing that interested me at first. But when I read the script, I became interested in understanding a character with such a complex psyche. I’ve already had several of these, and I think I’m basically such an actor-researcher. I understand a lot about myself and about life through my profession. It was interesting for me to think about what happened to Lena Garber, what kind of injuries she has, what kind of relationship with her family.

That is, while working on a character, you delve into yourself and see what points you have in common with the heroine.

Yes, of course. How else?

There are actors who, on the contrary, say that the most interesting thing for them is to build up a second personality within themselves and get something out of the character, that is, a completely reverse process.

But I always take something away from the character in the end. This is an exchange. At some point, I realized that roles surprisingly come to me, exactly when it is needed – when I understood something about myself or a certain period in my life passed. That is, six months ago I would not have been able to play it, because I did not understand what it was about, but now I understand. You immediately think: “Oh, you don’t have to go to a psychotherapist, you just need to play this difficult thing – and let go of this situation in this way.” What I do heals me.


Did you go to a psychotherapist yourself?

Yes. I have a very inadequate position on this matter, very pretentious. I went to psychologists for two and a half years, changed four different psychotherapists, and I was very interested – until the moment the therapist began to talk to me. I remember my last session: we are talking, and at some point. I am ashamed of this, but I say: “Tell me, have you watched Tarkovsky’s films?” The psychologist says: “Yes, Elizabeth, I watched.” Me: “Do you think Tarkovsky would make a film of his own if he had a psychotherapist?”

Well, this is a popular story – “they don’t fly from restaurants to space”, mentally healthy people, they say, don’t leave masterpieces behind, and so on.

Yes, this is an interesting topic. In general, because of this, I decided not to go to a psychologist, because I realized that these sessions deprive me of working material. The whole last year I was very lucky in the roles, and I gave all the injuries and problems in these roles. At the same time, I have many friends who go to a psychotherapist, tell fantastic things, and I see how great they are changing, how it helps them. Maybe someday I will go again, but for now I think that it rather destroys me.

Last year, your brother Vanya Yankovsky released the TV series Swamp, a thriller like Missing. Do you discuss your projects, advise something to each other?

Yes, all the time.

That is, he knew that you were trying out for Lost.

Yes, but I knew that he was trying out at the Swamp. Moreover, I was also called there for tests. But I didn’t go: Vanya was already approved and really wanted to act there, and I decided that it wasn’t very right to audition for the same project. This is solidarity. It’s funny that we met with him later in Minsk on the set: Vanya starred in Swamps, and I starred in Perelman’s Lost. Vanya and I even lived in the same hotel at first. Vanya always supports me, he is interested in everything, we are generally very friendly with him.

Tell me, have you considered anything other than acting?

I think I’m still considering. I am interested in many things, I am fond of many things. For example, I am writing.

Artistic texts or rather diary ones?

I have been keeping diaries since I was eight years old – I really like to write by hand. A few years ago I started writing prose. Not very much, on the table. This is seen only by my family and my master, Oleg Lvovich Kudryashov. In my second year at GITIS, he even tried to transfer me from acting to directing. He said that I would be very bored in acting. I myself thought about it. At the institute, they often said that I have a director’s brain. They didn’t even want to enroll me because of this, because it is believed that an actress with a small director inside is a problem.

I studied at a faculty where actors study together with directors. I dreamed about it from the eighth grade, even studied at the Moscow Art Theater School for two years, but still went to GITIS. The directors had their own program, the actors had their own, but there was also a joint part, where we learned to work with the directors, and the directors learned to explain to the artist what they needed.

I also thought – and still think – to go to study as a screenwriter, to try to write something. I’m also interested in film history. I am interested in animals, I work as a volunteer in a dog shelter, and sometimes, as a joke with my colleague Marite, we dream of creating an Empire of Dogs with luxurious villas, such a Rublyovka for dogs (laughs). But all this. I understand that the profession should bring income, so I wonder what I can do that would provide me in life. It is hardly possible to provide for yourself by doing Rublyovka for dogs.

This is a difficult question. It seems to me that, theoretically, you can make money with any strange things – and this happens everywhere.

Also true. In short, all the things that interest me are somehow connected with art, with cinema. If I were not an actress, I would probably become a screenwriter or a documentary filmmaker. Something like this.

When a person not from a creative family decides to go into a conditionally humanitarian profession, he is often scared, just put pressure on the impostor syndrome. And how does a child from a family of actors feel when he chooses creativity?

When you are born into a creative family, your stakes are even higher.

Are these your own expectations from yourself, or did you hear about it from the outside?

I don’t know if I would have had such a feeling if I hadn’t felt it from the outside. I always knew that great things were expected of me. Now everyone is using so many new concepts – gaslighting, toxicity, abuse and other terms for phenomena that humanity has finally paid attention to. And I suddenly realized that there is no word that refers to children from famous families and their problems. Although in fact, children from famous families are very often trolls. I studied at an ordinary educational school – and constantly fought there. I beat the guys, I was beaten, humiliated and insulted simply because my grandfather is a famous artist.


Children are very angry.

Yes, children are cruel in principle, this is normal. I didn’t seem to be a cruel child, but if they said something about me, I hit right away. That’s why I didn’t have any friends. When I entered the Moscow Art Theater School, everyone stood apart from me and whispered, because they knew that I was Yankovskaya. And I constantly heard to myself – yes, she is on the pull, pull, pull, pull. Now it doesn’t hurt me in any way, but then I was very worried about it.

When did you first realize that you are the daughter and granddaughter of very famous people?

When my grandfather died. We all have someone dying, that’s life. But usually people have the opportunity to cope with it on their own, to survive it. I didn’t have that opportunity.

It turns out that your personal grief ceases to be personal?

Yes, it turns out that it is. Since then, I can’t stand any hype and therefore I don’t go to premieres, I don’t like parties, secular society. When my grandfather died, I was 14 years old – the height of adolescence. Then I had an absolute disappointment in the media system.

Are you talking about tabloids?

Of course. My family tried to protect me, but it was impossible to do it completely. For example, people ran after me, a schoolgirl, they chased me – these were very unpleasant traumatic stories.


What did they want from you? For you to say something?

Yes, for me to share what I feel.

What can one feel when a grandfather dies?

So I don’t know. At that moment, I had my own picture of the world. Now I understand that it was an awesome lesson that made me a super strong person and, oddly enough, gave me a sense of humor, which is very protective of me.

A very hard lesson.

Tough, but it’s good that I passed it then. Although it is probably better to go through such things just later, but I am a fatalist and I believe that everything happens when it needs to. I am generally fixated on finding a cause and effect relationship, I need to learn some lesson from everything, and sometimes I dream of the time when I will be an old woman, open all my diaries and understand everything about my life.

You used to say harshly that you don’t like it when people pry into your personal life. But there’s a lot of good in popularity, isn’t there? It’s nice to come in beautiful clothes to a place with beautiful people, it’s nice to walk the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival.

Do you categorically reject all such things for yourself?

I just don’t make any plans for my popularity.

But it is inevitably connected with your profession.

I understand, but it brings me into some kind of stress, I’m afraid of it. And again, you need to understand that in my family popularity is neither a novelty nor a value. I remember how my photo with my grandfather was published in the 7 Days magazine when I was five years old. Everyone scoffed, but I didn’t understand at all – what is it? Well, such a grandfather. I immediately started to fight. In short, I don’t have this fun with popularity. Two of my idols that I’ve talked about a lot are Daniel Day-Lewis and Frances McDormand. These are people who have a profession. I don’t want my personality to be more than my work. And this moment is very easy to miss, and even more so for an actor it is easy not to notice how his life becomes much more interesting for everyone than what he does.


You are afraid of turning from an actor into an influencer.

Yes, I don’t want that. I want to keep some, I don’t know, purity. Here is Frances McDormand, a fantastic actress, in one of the interviews she said that at some point she decided to give up advertising, interviews, covers for ten years in order to be able to be on the screen not Frances McDormand, but a character. Or another example: Tilda Swinton, who is filmed in a huge amount of art-house slag, because this is also such a cleansing.

At the same time, she is a super media personality, the face of Chanel.

Yes, she just balances perfectly. Or actor Yura Borisov – I really like the way he leads his Instagram. There is no personal information, and therefore, if you want to look at Yura.

Do you need to go to the cinema?

You need to go to the cinema.

Can I ask an idiotic question?

Come on, yeah.

Are actors better at lying? Let’s say Meryl Streep comes home and wants to lie to her husband – and he has no chance, because this is Meryl Streep.

Good question, good question. You know, it seems to me that no, it’s not better. I lie very badly. For example, I love playing Mafia, and if it suddenly turns out that the mafia is me, then I immediately lose, because I am very happy.

Another stupid question. How to exit the character? What support to rely on to leave your hero behind the threshold of the house?

I can’t do it at all. A film about the poetess Nika Turbina will be released soon, where I played. During the filming, I caught myself that Turbina and I were alike in many ways, and that’s where I really started to get confused. At some point, Anya Mikhalkova, who played my mother, came up to me and said: “Listen, I’m worried about you, because you become your own character, you need to learn how to get out of this.” She supported me a lot, taught me what to do, what techniques to use. My father also gave me very good advice.

It’s just hard to even leave bank statements outside the door, and when you get used to another person, I can’t even imagine.

Look, let’s do this: all the actors are a little crazy anyway. And in any case, you take something from the characters. Therefore, it is so important that you have friends around you, family – some people who can both support and say that you are carried away.

Rounding off your relationship with the media, I get the impression that you take your career path super seriously – correct me if that’s not the case. I understand this approach perfectly, but, on the other hand, there is an example of the same Matthew McConaughey, who played a golden-haired handsome man in shorts all his life, and then it suddenly turned out that he was a great actor. A story about trial and error, where you can shit yourself a hundred times in a row, and then do something great. How much do you give yourself the opportunity to crap?

I don’t give at all. Apparently, also due to education, in GITIS we were also taught this way.


It seems to me that it is impossible to crap at the entrance, at the very beginning. It’s important to start right. But this is also pure luck and the opportunity to wait for your role. I’m from Moscow, I have a place to live, so I could wait, but there are situations when guys come from other cities, they need to urgently start working, and they can get into a very good project, or they can go through a series of some shit, to be seen. Everyone is very different. But I realized that it is very important to make mistakes. Because if you are not mistaken, you will quickly become ossified.


Yes, and you start to be even more afraid. That’s why it’s so cool to work in the theater, especially at rehearsals – there you always shit yourself. In GITIS, before each premiere, there were two pre-screenings-runs, and we deduced the law of two screenings there: if you shone and played fantastically in the first screening, then you will be one hundred percent crap in the second. And vice versa.


Why is that? Unable to keep the result?

Because this is such a profession. As soon as you take off, you must understand that the only way down from Olympus is down.

Are you afraid of being a star?

I don’t know. On the one hand, as if everything that happens is familiar to me, that is, the media space.
